Brushless Impact Drivers & Impact Wrenches

An impact driver adds rotational hammer blows to the spin, so it sinks long screws and lag bolts without twisting your wrist. Impact wrenches take that further for lug nuts and heavy bolts. Brushless motors give you more runtime and less heat per charge.

Impact driver or impact wrench?

An impact driver takes 1/4" hex bits for screws and small bolts. An impact wrench has a square drive for sockets and delivers far more torque for lug nuts and suspension bolts.

How much torque do I need for lug nuts?

Most car lug nuts are torqued to 80-100 ft-lbs, but rusted nuts need several times that to break loose. Look for an impact wrench rated well above 300 ft-lbs of breakaway torque.

Can I use regular drill bits in an impact driver?

Only hex-shank bits fit, and they should be impact-rated. Standard bits can snap under impact loads.

How to choose a cordless power tool

Is 18V the same as 20V?

Yes. 18V is the nominal voltage and 20V is the peak reading of a fully charged pack. The tools are the same class.
