Choosing the right protection for the job

Protective gear only works if it fits and you keep it on. Choose work gloves by the hazard: cut-resistant gloves for sheet metal and glass, nitrile-coated gloves for grip in oil and wet conditions, and leather for heat and abrasion.

For eyes, look for safety glasses marked ANSI Z87.1 or Z87+ for impact protection. For ears, compare the NRR (Noise Reduction Rating): anything above 85 dB, like power saws and grinders, calls for plugs or muffs.

Read the cut level

ANSI A1-A9 rates cut resistance. A4 and above suits sheet metal, glass and blades.

Look for Z87+

The plus sign means the lenses passed high-velocity impact testing.

Double up when it is loud

Plugs under earmuffs add protection for chainsaws and very loud equipment.
