A drill driver handles clean holes in wood and metal. A hammer drill adds a light percussion for brick and block. For concrete anchors and chiseling, an SDS rotary hammer does the job with a fraction of the effort.
Hammer drill or rotary hammer?
A hammer drill is fine for occasional holes in brick. A rotary hammer uses a piston mechanism that hits much harder, which makes it the right tool for concrete.
What does SDS mean?
SDS is a slotted bit shank that lets the bit slide back and forth while hammering. It locks in without a chuck key and transfers impact energy efficiently.

How to choose a cordless power tool
A cordless tool is really two purchases: the tool and the battery system behind it. Pick a voltage class that covers the jobs you do most. 12V tools are light and ideal for cabinets, furniture and tight spaces. 18V/20V tools are the all-rounders for decks, framing, masonry anchors and metal.
Brushless motors run cooler and get more work out of each charge than brushed motors, so they are worth paying for on tools you use every week. Look at torque for drivers, no-load speed for grinders and saws, and impact energy for rotary hammers.
Impact driver or drill?
Impact drivers sink long screws and lag bolts with little wrist strain. Drills win for clean holes, hole saws and mixing.

Common questions
Is 18V the same as 20V?
Yes. 18V is the nominal voltage and 20V is the peak reading of a fully charged pack. The tools are the same class.
What does brushless mean?
The motor is controlled electronically instead of by carbon brushes. It runs cooler, lasts longer and gives more runtime per charge.
