Buying hand tools that last
Good hand tools are about steel and fit. Chrome vanadium and chrome molybdenum steels hold their shape under load, and a precise fit on the fastener is what stops rounded bolts and slipping screwdrivers.
A multi-tool earns its place when it replaces the handful of tools you reach for most: pliers, a blade, screwdrivers and a bottle opener. Check that the blades lock, the pliers close cleanly and it opens with one hand if you plan to carry it every day.
Locking blades matter
On a multi-tool, blades and drivers that lock open are safer and more useful under pressure.
Six-point sockets
Six-point sockets grip the flats of a bolt and are far less likely to round it off than twelve-point ones.
Keep steel dry
A quick wipe and a light coat of oil after wet work keeps rust off pivots and jaws.
Common questions
What should a good multi-tool have?
Needle-nose pliers with wire cutters, a locking blade, flat and Phillips drivers and a solid pivot. Everything else is a bonus.
Are multi-tools allowed on planes?
Not in carry-on bags if they contain a blade in the US. Pack them in checked luggage.
How do I stop hand tools rusting?
Dry them after use, oil moving parts and store them off the floor in a closed box.
