Buying guide

Outfitting your rig for the trail

Airing down is the first move on sand, rock and mud. A brass tire deflator set drops all four tires fast and evenly, and a 12V compressor with real duty cycle brings them back up at the trailhead without waiting in line at a gas station.

Recovery gear is the insurance policy you hope not to use. A kinetic recovery rope stretches to pull a stuck rig free without the shock load of a chain, and soft shackles replace heavy steel D-rings where there is no solid anchor point.

Match rope to rig weight

A kinetic rope should be rated at roughly 2-3 times your vehicle's gross weight.

Check compressor duty cycle

A 100% duty cycle compressor fills all four tires back-to-back without a cool-down break.

Soft shackles over steel

They are lighter, safer if something lets go, and will not rust shut in winter salt.

Common questions

What size kinetic recovery rope do I need?

For a mid-size truck or Jeep, a 7/8 inch rope rated around 28,000 lbs is the common choice. Heavier rigs step up to 1 inch.

How low should I air down off-road?

Most rigs run 15-20 PSI on dirt and rock, and 10-12 PSI in soft sand. A deflator set makes the process fast and consistent.

Do I need a dual battery setup?

If you run a fridge, camp lights or a compressor overnight, a second battery with an isolator keeps your starting battery safe.
